A pH sensor is an analytical instrument that measures the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid solution. It works by detecting the concentration of hydrogen ions (H⁺) and converts this reading into a numerical pH value ranging from 0 (strongly acidic) to 14 (strongly alkaline), with 7 being neutral.
How it Works
Most standard pH sensors (often called pH probes) are potentiometric devices that contain three main components in a single housing:
- Measuring Electrode: Typically a glass bulb with a thin membrane sensitive to hydrogen ions.
- Reference Electrode: Provides a stable, unchanging baseline voltage.
- Temperature Element: Measures the solution's temperature to automatically adjust and correct the pH calculation.
When the sensor is submerged in a liquid, an electrical voltage is generated across the glass membrane, which is directly proportional to the hydrogen ion concentration. A connected pH meter interprets this tiny millivolt signal and displays the final pH value.
